Great Works protects land in a number of ways:
Owned (fee) properties are those that were either donated to us, or purchased by GWRLT, often with the assistance of partners such as The Nature Conservancy or the Mt. Agamenticus to the Sea Initiative.
Easement properties remain in the ownership of a private individual, but the Land Trust holds a legal conservation easement on the property or a portion of a property, with certain restrictions prohibiting development. The specific restrictions vary.
Transfer properties are public properties that GWRLT has helped conserve but title has passed to another organization, often the Maine Department of Inland Fish & Wildlife, or The Nature Conservance, or another land trust.
