Stalk the Stealthy Woodcock

Tuesday, April 7, 6:30 pm
Raymond & Simone Savage Wildlife Preserve

15 Dover-Eliot Road, South Berwick

Gateway to Maine: Outside – 2014 Adventures in Nature Series Program: A White Pine Programs’ Naturalist Night at the Great Works Regional Land Trust’s Savage Preserve in South Berwick.

Come observe an unlikely harbinger of Spring: The American Woodcock, a stout, long-beaked, marvel with its curiously regimented mating display. Join naturalists Dan Hansche and John Pazdon for a view into the world of this unique member of the sandpiper family.

Learn about this fascinating woods-dwelling shorebird, also known as the timberdoodle, wood snipe, or bog sucker. Like clockwork, just after sunset for a few weeks each spring, the male woodcock begins a mating performance that involves a spiraling aerial display that Aldo Leopold once called the skydance. While meant to entice the female woodcock, it's sure to impress all who have the opportunity to view it.

Wear waterproof footwear and bring something to sit on.

For last minute hike details call 207-266-9926.

This is a family friendly event.
